Data released last Wednesday revealed that UK inflation slowed for a second consecutive month, though prices still rose by 10.5% in the year to December. The small drop, down from 10.7% in November, came despite food prices soaring to their highest level since 1977 in the month. Restaurant and hotel prices also rose sharply in December, while petrol and diesel costs eased slightly.
